Riding a tandem

Above the Loire.
Compared to a more usual bike set, where each traveller ride it's personnal bike, the tandem formula has, from our point of vue, several advantages (some are linked to it's recumbent position) :
  • Ease to talk : Except in downtown at rush hour, we hear each other quite easily (at least Vincent hears Vinciane, the opposite is'nt always true)
  • Physicaly together : Each one can manage it's effort, even if crancksets are linked by the same chain ! Therefore, the tired can rely on the other one to keep going on (a bit slower, of course). Interestingly, there is no wait upside the hill.
No kickstand, unfortunately.

But the tandem formula also has some drawbacks :
  • Bulk : it is a long and uneasy bike to manoever on foot. Taking it on a train may also be quite difficult. Although the turn raduis is very large, it's not an issue.
  • Hauling stuff : less frame means less anchor points for paniers. While we were limiting weight with our two bikes, we now try to limit volume, and look for very compact gear.
  • Very visible : You can't go through town without letting a trail of cautious (or less cautious sometimes) attention.
  • Can't swap : chain lengths have to be set to the rider's heigth (leg length more precisely) and having to learn how to ride make our positions fixed: Vincent in front, Vinciane behind.
To sum up, it is very nice for a long trip. The more other means of transport are required, the more a pair of bikes becomes preferable to this big vehicle.

The project

Our project gathers several ideas we tried to tie and fit into a single title :
  • tandem : the perfect bike for a united couple, a bit less perfect about other aspects. It is also a recumbent ^^
  • 2 : for "to", plain simple in english, less in french.
  • Scandinavie : destination of this journey, just an excuse for a northern Europe bike ride.
  • VV : It's us !

What else can we add ?
It is planned over 6 month and not sponsored. There aren't any assignment nor message to bring to the world although the way we travel has a meaning for us, but that's another story ;-).

Close to the end of our 2012 Loire's tour.

  • 2 : à prononcer à l'anglaise ("to") pour indiquer notre destination.

And here's the men collection :

Et voici la version masculine :

Prêt à nager !
Veste similaire, pantalon quasi-identique (guêtres intégrées artisanalement) et chaussures shimano MT-71.

Women waterproofing

Knowing where and when we expect to go, knowing too that we may sometimes be very far from the sunny weather as it is now in Toulouse, we'll be ready for some wet periods.
Here is our women summer 2013 collection :

Waterproofed Vinciane !
Above a grotesque home-made jacket (gore-tex), a waterproof and not breathable pant, and a pair of Vaude Minsk over-shoes (that seem quite fine).

To come, our men summer 2013 collection, completely different !

To sum up, it should make around 9000km for a 5-6 month trip and about 60-80km per biking day (there are days planned for tourism and rest !).
J-46 J-30 (Sorry, the translator has been quite lazzy/busy/sick for some time ^^)

Time is running and the D-day is coming (D for departure, of course).
Are we ready ? Surely not !
Are we motivated ? More than ever !
While some administrative procedures are being completed, we made some serious progress about the sewing workshop.
The weather, although previously really cold for Toulouse, is now going wet and not that much warm, which should prepare us for cool days up there.
Very (very ) soon, we'll present the planned route we should follow.
