ViaRhona ? Where ?

Here we go, for another adventurous day, after leaving Chrystèle and Étienne's family !

Chrystèle, Étienne, thank you !
Starting is easy, it's down to the Saône's docks, equipped with cycle paths. It's getting more difficult afterwards when we have to go back on the road and leave the way to a rain shower, but it's ok.

Arriving in Lyon, we feel like we are back to the stone age of cycling cities. The roadway is very wide, full of cars and the cycling network almost nonexistent.
Moreover, the tourist office is quite discreet in the middle of a large square, but all signposts (for cars obviously) turn around...
We finally get the awaited brochure about the ViaRhona, a major cycle road, just to learn that it is unfinished, and by large !

We however take our time for lunch before trying to get out. And we try, looking at the map at every major crossing, no useful signpost in sight.

We ride through some desperate suburban areas, devastated by industry or railroad. We can't escape too the usual suburban road along a highway (but have better experiences with drivers than in Scandinavia).
As our first time on the ViaRhona, it is very disappointing.

With some luck we get back on a greenway, understanding that the whole ViaRhona is just a mix of whatever cycling infrastructure already existing along the Rhône.

Just having a distant view on Vienne, before the rain storm hits us, with lightnings and thunders. Vincent loves it, Vinciane hates it.
But everything has an end, the one of the rain being earlier than that of the day !

On this part of the ViaRhona, we could see some of the stupidest layouts for a cycling way. To sum up, one cannot ride on it with a recumbent or a tandem or a kid trailer or various rolling objects that planners couldn't think about...
At the end of our trip, we are ashamed for this poor cycle road. Let's hope it gets better in the south...

Moreover, the asphalt is often devastated by trees' roots. All this looks like a super cheap bike infrastructure, designed to get the maximum political credit instantly and not to last more than one mandate, at least in the Rhône county.

After such a long and rough day, we settle close to the greenway, with a beautiful view on one of the numerous nuclear powerplant in the Rhône valley. What an expensive milestone !
We fall asleep with more rain, hoping to get better conditions for tomorrow...
