Today we climb, never stopping and relentlessly !
Well, that's what we would like to be able to, but you can't cheat with reality : starting almost from sea level, we must get to a col at 1250m and roads aren't joking with steepness !
Well, that's what we would like to be able to, but you can't cheat with reality : starting almost from sea level, we must get to a col at 1250m and roads aren't joking with steepness !
One can climb on the old road, steep, sinuous, narrow and now dedicated to cyclists and hikers with its unlit and short raw tunnels. Now the new road is just a bit less steep, but much wider and with many long tunnels.
We really thought we could avoid it, but we had to leave the old road an get on the new one, just for the 2km long tunnel that is climbing in rounds INSIDE the mountain. It's unpleasant at best, scaring otherwise, having to gess where to drive in this half darkness : lights aren't powerful enough to show you the way, and powerful enough so the bike's own light is useless...
At the end of it, we breathe fresh air again, and finish the climb on the steeper old road but outside of full sunlight.
We quickly pass by a high waterfall (140m) and get on the first parts of the plateau, in a small and green valley at 750m above the sea. There are a lot of these so-called rustic "cabans" that look more like a residential area than like the lonely shelter surrounded by wild nature...
We are still climbing gently. Trees are disappearing from the landscape before the col. This is it, we are on the Hardengervidda's plateau !
Such beautiful and gigantic landscapes can't fit in pixels. The road is going through this naked and almost flat area, you can see so far ahead !
Without this unfriendly road trafic, it would be an extraordinary moment. We feel so free, it's exhilarating !
Starting to look for one of the marked campings on our maps at the end of the day, we find none. What a joke, there are only hotels on this plateau and it's so difficult to find a suitable place for the tent, that we keep going on : there are no flat areas with enough soil to pitch anything in this windy place.
Even though we're tired, we have to keep going on, finding any of the marked campings before Geilo, where we stop after 21 o'clock.
We get our place for the tent and a warm shower... tomorrow morning only ! We finish our diner just before midnight, surrounded by the remnants of the midnight sun, and by some mosquitoes that hardly bother us given our finnish experience.
